Nether Portal Calculator

Overworld coordinates divide by 8 in the Nether and Nether coordinates multiply by 8. For example, X 1000, Z -400 in the Overworld is X 125, Z -50 in the Nether, and Y does not change.

How to use

  1. Choose Overworld to Nether or Nether to Overworld.
  2. Type the X and Z coordinates. Y is optional and stays the same.
  3. Build your portal at the result. The rows show the area the game searches for an existing portal, which depends on the edition.

How it works

Overworld to Nether: X ÷ 8 and Z ÷ 8, rounded down to the next lower whole number. Nether to Overworld: X × 8 and Z × 8. The Y coordinate is not scaled.

Rounding down means negative values go further from zero: −1 becomes −1 and −29 becomes −4.

When you step through a portal, the game looks for a portal near the converted coordinates. In Java it searches a radius of 16 blocks in the Nether and 128 blocks in the Overworld. In Bedrock it searches 128 blocks in both. The closest one is used, and if none exists the game builds a new portal.

To link two portals exactly, place the second one close to the converted point and farther than the search radius from any other portal. Values follow the Minecraft Wiki page on Nether portals.

FAQ

How do I convert Overworld coordinates to the Nether?

Divide X and Z by 8 and round down. A base at X 800, Z −1600 matches X 100, Z −200 in the Nether. Y stays unchanged.

How far can two portals be and still link?

In Java, the Overworld portal finds a Nether portal within 16 blocks of the converted spot, and a Nether portal finds an Overworld portal within 128 blocks. Bedrock uses 128 in both directions.

Why did my portal take me to the wrong place?

Two portals inside the search radius of the same point can be mixed up. The closest one wins. Keep portals more than about 2 radii apart, or build them far from each other.

Can I use it for travel along a straight line?

Yes. One block in the Nether equals eight in the Overworld, so a 1,000-block trip in the Nether covers 8,000 blocks above. Build the Nether portal at the matching coordinates.
