Game Download Time Calculator

A 100 GB download at 100 Mbps takes about 2 hours 13 minutes 20 seconds, because 100 Mbps moves 12.5 MB each second.

How to use

  1. Enter the download size and choose its unit. Game launchers usually show GB.
  2. Enter your speed and choose Mbps for an internet plan or MB/s for what a downloader shows.
  3. Lower the efficiency below 100% to allow for server limits and overhead. The time updates as you type.

How it works

Time = size in bytes ÷ speed in bytes per second.

Network speeds are in bits, so 8 Mbps is 1 MB/s (megabits ÷ 8 = megabytes). A 1 Gbps line is at most 125 MB/s.

MB, GB and TB are decimal (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). MiB, GiB and TiB are binary (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes), which is what many operating systems call GB. A GiB is about 7.4% larger than a GB.

Efficiency scales the speed you enter. Real downloads rarely hold your plan's full speed, so 85 to 95% is a typical guess.

FAQ

Why is my download slower than my plan says?

Plans are sold in megabits per second and downloads are shown in megabytes per second, a factor of eight apart. On top of that servers, Wi-Fi and protocol overhead rarely deliver the full line speed.

Is a GB the same as a GiB?

No. A GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes and a GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Stores and launchers differ in which they use, so pick the unit that matches what you see.

How big is the game I want to download?

Sizes change with every patch, so this tool has no presets. Read the current size on the store or launcher page and type it in.

Does it include install time?

No. It covers transfer only. Unpacking and shader compilation after the download take extra time on top.
