Presses per second is presses divided by seconds. 40 presses in 5 seconds is 8 per second. Holding the key does not count.

How to use

  1. Pick a test length from 1 to 100 seconds.
  2. Click the box once so it has keyboard focus, then press the Space bar. The first press starts the timer. On a phone or tablet, tap the box instead.
  3. Press as fast as you can until the time runs out.
  4. Read your presses per second, your rank and the chart. Try again to beat your best.

How it works

Presses per second = total presses / test length in seconds, rounded to two decimals.

Only a fresh key-down counts. When you hold the bar, the keyboard repeats the key many times a second; those repeats are flagged by the browser and ignored here, so holding the key gives you nothing.

The timer starts at the first press and stops on time even if you stop pressing.

How the space bar differs from a mouse button

A mouse switch is a small, light click under one finger. A keyboard space bar is a long bar with a longer travel, and it can be struck with a thumb, a finger or two thumbs in turn. That is why spacebar speed and click speed are different skills.

Most people reach 5 to 8 presses per second with one thumb. Alternating both thumbs usually adds 1 or 2 more, because each thumb rests half of the time.

Techniques that help

  • Keep the thumb or finger high and tap from the knuckle rather than pushing from the wrist.
  • Two thumbs in turn spread the load and delay fatigue in longer tests.
  • A firm, flat desk and a keyboard that does not flex give more consistent presses.
  • Mechanical switches with a short travel are faster than soft membrane keys, but the best-scoring is still the one you are used to.

Spacebar speed in games

Space bar mashing matters in jump spam, button-mashing mini games and some rhythm tools. Games read the key at their own tick rate, so a very high score here may not translate one to one into the game. Use this page to compare your own sessions, not different games.

FAQ

Why does holding the Space bar not count?

A held key makes the operating system send repeated key events. The browser marks them as repeats, and this tool skips them so only real, separate presses are counted.

Do I have to click the box first?

Yes, on a computer. The box must have keyboard focus so that Space does not scroll the page. Click it once, and it also gets focus again after each run.

Does it work on a phone?

There is no space bar on a touch screen, so taps on the box are counted instead. That makes it a tapping speed test on mobile.

Is my best score stored?

Yes, in your browser only, separately for each length. Clearing site data removes it.
