Double Click Test

A normal double click has a gap of about 150 to 300 ms. Clicks that follow each other in under 80 ms are flagged as possible mouse chattering.

How to use

  1. Double-click the box at your normal speed. Each gap between two clicks is shown in milliseconds.
  2. To check for chattering, click once, slowly, many times, with a pause of about a second. A healthy mouse shows no warning.
  3. Read the last gap, the fastest, the average and the chatter count. The latest 12 gaps appear as chips, and suspicious ones are marked.
  4. Press Reset to clear the log.

How it works

The gap is the time between two consecutive presses of the main button, measured with the browser's high-resolution clock.

A gap of less than 80 ms is counted as a suspected chatter, because a person rarely presses a button twice that fast on purpose. Gaps over 1 second are treated as separate clicks and are left out of the fastest and average values.

The check is a hint, not a hardware diagnosis. Fast intentional double clicks can sometimes land below 80 ms.

What mouse chattering is

Chattering, also called a double-click fault, is when one press registers as two or more clicks. It comes from a worn or dirty microswitch whose metal contact bounces. It shows up as files that open when you meant to select them, dragging that drops by itself, or characters typed twice with a keyboard.

The bounce lasts only a few milliseconds up to a few tens of milliseconds, far shorter than any intended double click.

How to run the check

  • Click slowly, once per second, 30 times. Any flagged gap is a real fault candidate.
  • Press harder and softer, and at the very edge of the button, since a worn switch can fail only in certain spots.
  • Try the other button and another mouse for comparison.
  • If it chatters, clean around the button, update or reset the driver settings, or replace the switch or the mouse.

FAQ

What is the system double click speed?

Operating systems accept two clicks as a double click when the gap is below a set limit, by default about 500 ms on Windows. This tool measures your real gap, not the setting.

My mouse shows a warning once. Is it broken?

One flag can be a very fast double click or a slip. Repeat the slow single click run. If flags keep appearing on single clicks, the switch is likely faulty.

Does it work with a touch screen?

Yes, taps are measured as well, but chattering is a mouse switch problem, so test with a mouse.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The timing is calculated in your browser and nothing is stored.
