How it works
Surnames are picked at random from the 100 most common Japanese surnames (2008 estimates from myoji-yurai.net and Meiji Yasuda, as listed on Wikipedia). Satō, Suzuki and Takahashi lead the list.
Given names come from Meiji Yasuda Life's 2025 baby name survey: the top 50 readings for boys and girls, each written with the kanji spellings parents used most for that reading. Readings with no common kanji spelling in the survey were left out, which leaves 31 boy and 32 girl names.
Japanese order is surname first. The romaji line uses Western order (given name, surname) in Hepburn with long vowel marks, and the passport line drops the marks as Japanese passports do (Satō becomes SATO).
Each pick is uniform at random, so a rare surname is as likely as Satō. Names are real and common, but the pairs are random and may match real people.

FAQ
Are these real Japanese names?
Yes. Every surname is among the 100 most common in Japan, and every given name is a top 50 reading from the 2025 baby name survey, written in a kanji spelling parents actually chose.
Why is one reading written with different kanji?
Japanese parents choose kanji for both sound and meaning, so はると can be 陽翔, 遥斗 or 晴斗. The tool picks one of the most used spellings at random.
Why are these names modern?
The given names come from babies born in 2025, so they suit young characters. Older generations more often have names like ひろし or けいこ, which are not in this list.
Is this an anime name generator?
No. It makes ordinary names a Japanese family would choose today, not fantasy or character names.
