How to use

  1. Choose Add VAT if your price is before VAT, or Remove VAT if it already includes VAT.
  2. Enter the amount and pick the rate: 20% standard, 5% reduced or 0% zero rate.
  3. Read the net price, the VAT and the gross price. The result updates as you type.

How it works

Add VAT: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100, gross = net + VAT. £100 at 20% gives £20 VAT and £120 gross.

Remove VAT: VAT = gross × rate ÷ (100 + rate). At 20% that is gross × 1/6 (the VAT fraction), and at 5% it is gross × 1/21. £100.00 gross at 20% contains £16.67 VAT and £83.33 net.

Do not take 20% off a gross price. £120 minus 20% is £96, not the £100 net price.

UK VAT rates from gov.uk: standard 20% for most goods and services, reduced 5% for items such as home energy and children's car seats, zero 0% for items such as most food and children's clothes. Exempt supplies are outside VAT altogether and are not the same as zero-rated. Amounts are rounded to the penny. This is an estimate, not tax advice.

FAQ

How do I calculate VAT backwards from a total?

Divide the gross price by 6 to find the VAT at 20%. £120.00 ÷ 6 = £20.00 VAT, leaving £100.00 net. At 5%, divide by 21.

What is the difference between zero-rated and exempt?

Both charge no VAT to the customer. A business making zero-rated supplies can still reclaim VAT on its costs. A business making only exempt supplies cannot.

Do I need to be VAT registered to charge VAT?

Only VAT-registered businesses can charge VAT. Check the current registration threshold on gov.uk before you register or invoice VAT.

Is my data sent anywhere?
