How to use

  1. Choose Split equally for a simple division, or By order when people ordered different amounts.
  2. Equal: enter the bill before tax and tip and the number of people. By order: enter what each person ordered and use Add person for more rows.
  3. Add the tax and tip percentages. The result shows what each person pays and the full breakdown.

How it works

Tax = subtotal × tax % ÷ 100 and tip = subtotal × tip % ÷ 100. Total = subtotal + tax + tip.

Equal split divides the total by the number of people.

By order, the total is shared in proportion to each person's subtotal, so someone who ordered twice as much pays twice as much of the tax and tip too.

Everything is done in cents. When a share cannot be split exactly, the leftover cents go to the largest remainders, so the shares always add up to the exact total.

FAQ

Why does one person pay a cent more?

A total in cents cannot always be divided evenly. For example 100.00 split three ways is 33.34, 33.33 and 33.33. The extra cent keeps the sum exact.

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?

Here both tax and tip are taken from the subtotal you enter. If you tip on the pre-tax amount, which many people do, this matches. To tip on the total, raise the tip percentage accordingly or use the Tip calculator.

How do I split a shared appetiser?

Add the shared item divided by the number of sharers to each sharer's own amount, then use By order.

Does it work for any currency?

Yes. It treats amounts as units with two decimals, so it works for dollars, euros, pounds and similar currencies.
