Hangul Writing Worksheet

Pick the consonants preset and A4 paper with 16 mm cells: each page has 11 cells across and 15 rows. The 19 consonants at 3 rows each fill 4 pages, with one dark model cell, faint tracing cells and empty cells to write in.

How to use

  1. Choose a preset (consonants, vowels, syllable table, 가나다 row), or type your own letters, words or sentences. Put each practice item on its own line.
  2. Set the paper (A4 or Letter), cell size, guide style, font, the number of rows per item and how many of them are faint tracing rows.
  3. Check the preview. Each item starts with dark model characters, the rest of that row repeats them in faint gray to trace over, and the remaining rows are empty cells.
  4. Press Save PDF to download the sheet, or Print to print it directly. Print at 100% scale (Actual size) so the cells keep their size.

How it works

Cells across = floor((paper width - 30 mm margins) / cell size). Rows per page = floor((paper height - 30 mm margins - 14 mm for the name line) / cell size). A4 is 210 x 297 mm and Letter is 215.9 x 279.4 mm.

Each item is cut into rows of that many cells. The first row has the dark model characters followed by the same characters repeated in faint gray. Next come the faint tracing rows you chose, then empty rows. A space inside a sentence becomes one empty cell, and spaces at the start or end of a row are dropped.

Example: A4 with 16 mm cells gives 11 cells across and 15 rows per page (with the name line). The 19 consonants (14 basic and 5 double) at 3 rows each make 57 rows, which is 4 pages.

Preset syllable table: 14 consonants x 10 basic vowels (ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ ㅣ), built from the Unicode Hangul syllable block (U+AC00 + (initial x 21 + vowel) x 28), so 가 갸 거 겨 고 교 구 규 그 기 comes first.

Cell size by use

Cell sizeSuited for
12 mm (0.47 in)Adults and long sentences, many rows per page
16 mm (0.63 in)Default: school-age beginners, words
20 mm (0.79 in)Young children learning to form each letter
24 mm (0.94 in)First consonants and vowels, tracing with a thick pen

Guide styles

Box draws a plain square for every cell, like manuscript paper. Cross adds dashed lines through the center of each cell to help you balance the parts of a syllable block: the consonant on the left or top, the vowel on the right or middle, and the final consonant below.

FAQ

Is my text uploaded?

No. The sheet is drawn and the PDF is built in this browser tab. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Can I practice full sentences?

Yes. Type a sentence on one line. It is split across rows of cells, and spaces become an empty cell like on Korean manuscript paper (원고지). Up to 400 characters per sheet.

Does it show stroke order?

No. There is no stroke-order animation or numbering, because there is no stroke-order data with a clear free license to include. The faint tracing rows give you the shape to follow.

Which fonts are used, and can I use the sheets freely?

Noto Sans KR, Noto Serif KR, Nanum Pen Script and Gaegu, all under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. They are fetched from Google Fonts only when you pick them, and only the letters you need. If that fails, a Korean font on your device is used. The sheets you make are yours to print and share, including for teaching.

Why is a character drawn in a different style?

The four fonts cover Hangul. A Latin letter, number or symbol may be missing from a handwriting font and is then drawn with a fallback font.

The cells print smaller than on screen.

In the print dialog set the scale to 100% (Actual size) and turn off Fit to page. The PDF is already sized to A4 or Letter.
