WebP to PNG Converter

To turn a WebP image into a PNG, decode the WebP and save the pixels without loss, with transparency included. A lossy WebP does not regain detail by becoming a PNG, and the PNG is usually larger than the WebP. The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

How to use

  1. Drop one or more images onto the box, or press it to choose files. HEIC, HEIF, WebP, AVIF, PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP and TIFF are accepted, up to 50 MB each.
  2. Pick the output format, then set the quality. For JPG, choose the background that fills transparent areas. EXIF (camera, date, GPS location) is removed unless you tick the box to keep it.
  3. Check the sizes, then press Download on each file, or Download all (ZIP) when you converted several.

How it works

Each file is read by your browser, or by the libheif decoder for HEIC, and drawn on a canvas as plain pixels. The canvas is then saved in the format you chose. Because the pixels are decoded and encoded again, converting between lossy formats such as JPG and WebP adds a small loss each time, so keep the original and convert from it once.

JPG, WebP and AVIF use the quality slider: a lower number gives a smaller file with more visible blocks and blur. PNG is lossless and ignores it, so its size depends on the picture, and photos are usually much larger as PNG than as JPG. JPG has no transparency, so clear areas are filled with the background color you pick, white by default.

Saving through a canvas drops all metadata. If you keep EXIF, the tool copies the EXIF block of the original into the new JPG, PNG or WebP and sets its Orientation tag to 1, because the pixels are already turned upright. AVIF files cannot carry it here. Animated GIFs use their first frame.

FAQ

Why convert WebP to PNG?

Many image editors, print shops, forms and older apps still do not accept WebP, while PNG is accepted almost everywhere. Saving as PNG makes the picture usable in those places.

Is the transparency kept?

Yes. PNG supports a transparent background, so the clear areas of a WebP stay clear. Pick JPG as the output instead if you want a solid background color.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?

WebP is usually saved with lossy compression, while PNG stores every pixel exactly. The same picture therefore takes more space as PNG. The quality slider has no effect on PNG.

Does the PNG look better than the WebP?

No. The PNG holds exactly what the WebP showed, so detail already lost to compression does not come back. What you gain is a format that more software can open.

What happens to an animated WebP?

Only the first frame is converted, because PNG here is a single still image.
