Webcam Test
Press Start camera to see a preview. The video never leaves this page.
How to use
- Press Start camera and allow camera access when your browser asks. Nothing is requested until you press the button.
- Check the preview. Mirror view is on by default, like a video call; untick it to see the image as others see it.
- Read the resolution, frame rate and camera name below the preview. If you have more than one camera, pick it from the list.
- Press Stop camera when you are done. The camera light turns off. The video is never sent to a server.
How it works
The tool asks the browser for a camera stream with an ideal size of 1920 x 1080. The camera and browser pick the closest mode they support, so the resolution shown is what you actually got, read from the video track settings and the video element.
Reported frame rate is the value the browser gives for the track. Measured FPS counts the video frames actually delivered to the page over the last second, using requestVideoFrameCallback where the browser supports it.
Standard names such as HD (1280 x 720) or Full HD (1920 x 1080) are shown only when the size matches exactly.
FAQ
Is my video recorded or uploaded?
No. The preview is processed only in your browser. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent to a server, and the stream stops when you press Stop camera or leave the page.
Why is the resolution lower than my camera's rating?
The page asks for 1920 x 1080 as an ideal, not a requirement. The browser may choose a lower mode because of the camera driver, USB bandwidth, lighting, or another app using the camera. The value shown is the one actually in use.
Why is the measured FPS lower than the reported frame rate?
Many webcams lower their frame rate in dim light to get a brighter image. A busy computer or a background tab can also deliver fewer frames. Try more light and keep the tab in front.
The browser says permission was denied. What now?
Click the lock or site settings icon in the address bar, set Camera to Allow, then reload the page. On a laptop, also check the system privacy settings and any physical camera shutter.
Why does the preview look mirrored?
Mirror view flips only the preview on your screen so it feels like a mirror. It does not change the camera or what other apps receive. Untick Mirror view to see the unflipped image.
