Mic Test
Press Start to check your microphone. Audio never leaves this page.
-- dBFS
Level labels are a rough guide.
No recording yet.
How to use
- Press Start microphone test and allow microphone access when your browser asks. Nothing is requested until you press the button.
- Speak normally. The bar should move with your voice. If you have more than one microphone, pick it from the list.
- Press Record, say a few words, then press Stop and listen to the playback. The recording stays on this page and is never uploaded.
- Press Stop microphone when you are done. The browser's microphone indicator turns off.
How it works
The browser passes the microphone signal to a Web Audio analyser. Several times a second the tool takes the root mean square (RMS) of the latest samples and converts it to decibels relative to full scale: dBFS = 20 x log10(RMS).
0 dBFS is the loudest level the signal can hold, so normal readings are negative. The bar shows the range from -60 dBFS to 0 dBFS, and the thin line marks the recent peak, which falls back slowly.
The level labels are a rough guide only: below about -50 dBFS reads as silent, -50 to -30 as quiet, -30 to -6 as a good level, and above about -6 as loud, where clipping becomes likely.
FAQ
Is my voice uploaded anywhere?
No. The level meter and the recording are processed entirely in your browser. The recording is kept in memory on this page and disappears when you close or reload it.
The browser says permission was denied. What now?
Click the lock or site settings icon in the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, then reload the page. On a phone, also check that the browser app has microphone permission in the system settings.
The bar moves but the recording does not work.
Recording uses the MediaRecorder feature. Some older browsers do not support it; the level meter still works there, so you can still confirm that the microphone picks up sound.
Why is my level very low?
Move closer to the microphone, check that the right input is selected, and raise the input volume in your system sound settings. Some headsets also have a mute switch on the cable.
Why does nothing happen when I press Start?
Microphone access only works on secure (https) pages, and only if a microphone is connected and not blocked by another app or by system privacy settings. The message under the button explains which case applies.
