PNG to JPG Converter
To turn a PNG into a JPG, save the pixels with lossy JPG compression. At quality 90 a photo is usually a small fraction of its PNG size. JPG has no transparency, so clear areas are filled with a background color, white by default. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How to use
- Drop one or more images onto the box, or press it to choose files. HEIC, HEIF, WebP, AVIF, PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP and TIFF are accepted, up to 50 MB each.
- Pick the output format, then set the quality. For JPG, choose the background that fills transparent areas. EXIF (camera, date, GPS location) is removed unless you tick the box to keep it.
- Check the sizes, then press Download on each file, or Download all (ZIP) when you converted several.
How it works
Each file is read by your browser, or by the libheif decoder for HEIC, and drawn on a canvas as plain pixels. The canvas is then saved in the format you chose. Because the pixels are decoded and encoded again, converting between lossy formats such as JPG and WebP adds a small loss each time, so keep the original and convert from it once.
JPG, WebP and AVIF use the quality slider: a lower number gives a smaller file with more visible blocks and blur. PNG is lossless and ignores it, so its size depends on the picture, and photos are usually much larger as PNG than as JPG. JPG has no transparency, so clear areas are filled with the background color you pick, white by default.
Saving through a canvas drops all metadata. If you keep EXIF, the tool copies the EXIF block of the original into the new JPG, PNG or WebP and sets its Orientation tag to 1, because the pixels are already turned upright. AVIF files cannot carry it here. Animated GIFs use their first frame.
Which format to choose
| Format | Good for | Transparency | Size for a photo |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos, forms, email, any device | No | Small |
| PNG | Screenshots, logos, graphics | Yes | Large |
| WebP | Photos and graphics on websites | Yes | Smaller than JPG |
| AVIF | Websites that want the smallest files | Yes | Smallest |
FAQ
What happens to the transparent parts of my PNG?
JPG cannot be transparent, so clear areas are filled with the background color you pick, white by default. Choose another color if the picture will sit on a dark page.
Why does my screenshot look blurry around the text?
JPG compression smudges sharp edges, which shows on text and thin lines. For screenshots, logos and diagrams keep PNG, or raise the quality to 95 or more.
What quality should I choose?
For photos a quality of 85 to 92 is hard to tell apart from the PNG and saves most of the space. Go lower for a smaller file, and look at the result before you download it.
Can I get the PNG back from the JPG?
Not exactly. JPG throws away detail, and transparency is gone once it is filled with a color. Keep the original PNG if you may need it again.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The PNG is read and the JPG is written in this browser tab, and no copy leaves your device.
