Time to Decimal Calculator
7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 decimal hours (45 / 60 = 0.75). At 18.50 an hour that pays 143.38. A week of 8:15, 7:45, 8:30, 8:00 and 6:20 adds up to 38:50, or 38.83 hours.
How to use
- To convert a time, choose Time to decimal and type hours and minutes as h:mm, for example 7:45. Seconds are optional (7:45:30).
- To go the other way, choose Decimal to time and type decimal hours such as 7.75.
- To total a timesheet, choose Add times and type one time per line. Minutes over 59 carry into hours for you.
- Enter an hourly rate if you want the pay for the time. Leave it empty to skip.
- Use the chart below for minutes 0 to 59, and Print chart for a copy to keep at your desk.
How it works
Decimal hours = hours + minutes / 60 + seconds / 3600. So 7:45 is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75, and 8:20 is 8 + 20/60 = 8.3333.
Going back, the whole part is the hours and the decimal part x 60 is the minutes. 7.75 hours has 0.75 x 60 = 45 minutes, so 7:45. The tool rounds to the nearest second.
Pay = decimal hours x hourly rate. Pay on a timesheet needs decimal hours because 7:45 x 18.50 does not work, while 7.75 x 18.50 = 143.375.
The chart rounds to two decimals, which is the usual payroll convention. 1 minute is 0.0167 hours and shows as 0.02. For exact pay use the converter, which keeps full precision, and round once at the end.
FAQ
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 15 / 60 = 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 20 minutes is 0.33.
How do I convert 8 hours 30 minutes to decimal?
30 minutes is 0.5 hours, so 8:30 is 8.5 hours.
Why does a timesheet use decimal hours?
Payroll multiplies hours by a rate, and minutes do not multiply cleanly because there are 60 of them, not 100. Decimal hours turn 7:45 into 7.75 so that the pay is simply 7.75 x rate.
Can I add up more than 24 hours?
Yes. Totals can pass 24 hours, for example 38:50 for a work week, and are shown as hours, minutes and decimal hours.
Why does the chart show 0.02 for one minute?
One minute is 1/60 = 0.01667 hours, shown as 0.02 at two decimals. Rounding every day separately can drift from rounding the weekly total, so add up the time first and convert the total.
