How it works
The ROC (Minguo, 民國) calendar counts years from the founding of the Republic of China on 1 January 1912, which is ROC year 1. So ROC year = AD year - 1911, and AD year = ROC year + 1911.
Years before the founding are written "Before ROC" (民國前). There is no year 0, so 1911 is Before ROC 1 and 1900 is Before ROC 12. For these, Before ROC year = 1912 - AD year, and AD year = 1912 - Before ROC year.
Example: 1990 - 1911 = 79, so 1990 is ROC 79. And ROC 115 + 1911 = 2026.
The ROC adopted the Gregorian calendar with its founding, so since 1912 a ROC year starts on 1 January and has the same months and days as the AD year. This tool converts years only: dates before 1912 were recorded in other calendars, so a full date there cannot be converted by subtraction.

Sources and limits
- The rule ROC year = AD year - 1911 and the use of "Before ROC" (民國前) for earlier years follow the Wikipedia article "Minguo calendar" (Republic of China calendar), which gives 1912 as year 1 and 1911 as Before ROC 1.
- This tool converts calendar years only. A date in the Qing dynasty was recorded in the Chinese lunar calendar and in reign years, so it does not map to a Gregorian date by subtraction.
- Check an official form if it asks for a specific format. Taiwan documents usually write the ROC year first, as in 民國115年.
