How to use

  1. Press Use my location, or pick the nearest city from the list.
  2. The qibla angle is shown in degrees from true north, clockwise. The arrow in the circle points to the Kaaba.
  3. On a phone, press Turn on compass and hold the phone flat. Turn around until the arrow points straight up and the words Facing the qibla appear.

How it works

The qibla is the starting direction of the shortest path over the Earth's surface (a great circle) from your location to the Kaaba, at 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E.

The angle comes from the initial-bearing formula on a sphere, using the differences in latitude and longitude between you and the Kaaba. The distance uses the haversine formula with an Earth radius of 6371 km.

From Lahore the qibla is about 260°, slightly south of due west, and from Karachi about 268°. From London it is about 119°, between east and south-east.

FAQ

My phone compass keeps jumping. What should I do?

Keep the phone away from metal, magnets, speakers and wires, and move it in a figure 8 to calibrate it. If you are still unsure, use the angle in degrees with an ordinary compass.

Is the angle from magnetic north or true north?

From true north. The difference between true and magnetic north is a few degrees in Pakistan and the UK, so an ordinary compass may need a small adjustment.

Is my location saved?

Your location is read only when you press the button and is not sent anywhere. All the calculation runs in your browser.
