How to use

  1. For each course pick the letter grade and enter its credit hours. Name the course if you like. Use Add course for more rows and Remove to delete one.
  2. The semester GPA updates as you change a grade or credit.
  3. To get a cumulative GPA, enter your previous GPA and the credits behind it. The new total appears in the results.

How it works

Each letter grade is worth grade points: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0, with plus and minus steps in between.

Quality points for a course = grade points × credit hours. GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours.

Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous credits + this term's quality points) ÷ (previous credits + this term's credits).

Rows with zero or empty credits are ignored. This calculator uses the common unweighted 4.0 scale, so honors and AP bonus points are not added.

FAQ

Does my school use the same scale?

Many US schools use this scale, but some give A+ 4.3, skip plus and minus grades, or use other values. Check your registrar's table, because the calculator uses the standard values listed above.

How do I calculate a weighted GPA?

Weighted GPAs add a bonus, often +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB. That bonus differs by school, so this tool does not apply it.

How are pass/fail courses handled?

Pass/fail courses usually do not count towards GPA. Leave them out, or set their credits to 0.

How will my final exams change my GPA?

Enter the grade you expect in each course this term, then your previous cumulative GPA and credits. Change one grade at a time to see how far a finals result moves the cumulative GPA. In Google Trends (2021 to 2026), US searches for GPA calculators peak in the first half of December, around fall semester finals.

What is a good GPA?

It depends on the school and goal. 3.0 is a B average, and 3.5 or above is often a threshold for honors or competitive programmes.
