|---|---|---|
| 1 thousand | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| 1 lakh (100 thousand) | 1,00,000 | 100,000 |

| 1 crore (100 lakh, 10 million) | 1,00,00,000 | 10,000,000 |
| 10 crore (100 million) | 10,00,00,000 | 100,000,000 |

| 1 lakh crore (1 trillion) | 1,00,00,00,00,000 | 1,000,000,000,000 |
Worked examples
- ₹2.5 crore = 2.5 × 100 = 250 lakh = 25 million.
- ₹45 lakh = 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45 crore = 4.5 million.
- ₹12,50,000 = 12.5 lakh = 1.25 million. Read the digits right to left: 000 is the thousand part, 50 is fifty thousand, 12 is twelve lakh.
- ₹7,50,00,000 = 7.5 crore = 75 million.
- 3.2 lakh crore = 3.2 × 10¹² rupees = 3.2 trillion.
- 350 crore = 3.5 billion rupees.
Converting between the two systems
From lakh to million, divide by 10. From crore to million, multiply by 10. From crore to billion, divide by 100.
A lakh crore is a lakh multiplied by a crore, so it is 10⁵ × 10⁷ = 10¹² and equals one trillion. News reports of budget figures often use this unit, for example when a figure is given as ₹1.5 lakh crore.
Mistakes to watch for
- Confusing 10 lakh with 1 crore. 10 lakh is 1 million, while 1 crore is 100 lakh.
- Treating 1,00,000 and 100,000 as different amounts. They are the same number, only grouped differently.
- Converting rupees to dollars. This tool converts units, not currencies, so it has no exchange rate.
- Counting zeros. A crore has seven, a lakh has five, so a lakh crore has twelve.
